Ridin’ Around on the Saddle of LIFE tellin’ Cancer to “Cluck Off!!!”

GREETINGS FROM Backstage of the 2011 Cluck off For Cancer at Fort Rapids Indoor Water Park. This is gonna be a GREAT event (it better be, for all the work!), full of an AMAZING CAUSE, some stories of survival, full bellies of wings-from vendors competing to take home the Grand “Cluckin’” prize, and Music from The Lee Gantt Band, Kickin Dixie, Tony Rio, and they even allowed this hack to take the stage!

To help promote this event, I got creative. Even accepted the google+ thing. Many on this list are on google+, and others invited me, as I did for even more. Please add me to your google+? Oh…AND PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THIS THING?

I can be found at https://plus.google.com/113241497807245530864/posts?hl=en

But first things first. Sending thoughts and prayers from The East Coast to The Heartland of America. Georgia and The Carolina are bracing for Hurricane Irene. Now if she is anything like “Sister Irene” I had in school. She will be mean, angry, throw some stuff around, but forget where she is going and drift off out to sea. But on a serious note, I hope the Carolina weather this storm as our coastal neighbors do so well! Also prayers to all those hurt and injured in the Amtrak crash out in Nebraska.

We also have experienced an Earthquake here in The Midwest and East Coast. I was in my car when the initial quake hit, but the aftershock on Wednesday Night did wake me up. At first I thought AWESOME my bed was shaking in the middle of the night…then realized I was on the couch!

My buddies on The West Coast are making fun of all of us after the running, the press conferences, and all the news reports. Yes the media MAY HAVE BLOWN IT ALL OUT OF PROPORTION…but for those on the West Coast. Making Fun of me? Really? At least we over here don’t bundle up like it is -20’ when the thermometer drops below  60’. We may not have as steady a leg as those on the “shaky West Coast” but at least we are more “manly.”

Mother Nature has been busy with her Hurricanes, Earthquakes and WEATHER THAT IS KILLING MY SINUS’!

This has been a busy week for many. The kids are back in school (by the way congrats parents on sending them back!). I have a message to all the kids..1.) Enjoy it, these truly will be the best years of your life! 2.) Build your foundation , but DON’T LET ANYONE CRUSH YER DREAMS AND BECOME JUST A ‘ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL!!!’ (like the evil nuns at Newark Catholic did to me-I wonder if they are looking up at me now?)

This week has been busy for me as well…I have been preppin for The Cluck Off this weekend, as well as trying to keep my achy knees stable, and working on events in the near future-all while battelin a Migraine. This week has made me want to get back out to the “wild, wild, west” where dreams are made (and the weather is dry-and my sinus will dry up!). It didn’t help that I called out to get help from Apple, and a few others who I am a costumer of-just to be told they can’t help. I GUESS CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A THING OF THE PAST like honesty, hard work, and not wanting anything but what YOU EARN (ya know direct contrast to the Hope & Change society has been accustomed to) all reminded me you can’t depend on anyone but yourself. And how I want to go back to the trail blazin, gun slingin days of old, the time when you WORKED for what you had, and only needed what you could carry-or take over!!! A time when it was not important what brand or stitching was on your jeans, but what the scars on your hands (FROM HARD WORK) said about a person-NOT A BRAND LABEL!!! The times when dreams were made of gold and adventurers went lookin for THAT RUSH!!!

So has me thinkin, and put me in a “Cowboy State of Mind,” I should’ve been a Cowboy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIq1LvzSLsk&ob=av2n

I am in a very “Cowboy Mood” drifting off into my thoughts and while appreciating the joys in what I have, not without thinking about the loneliness I feel as I sit on my own saddle going from town to town in the life of a plains drifter.

Now don’t get me wrong…I LOVE WHAT I DO (and still wonder what it is I actually do). This life is amazing and just like the heroes from the Ole’ Western Saturday Morning Matinees, every weekend I get to ride off into the sunset after an amazing adventure.

Almost every weekend I get to live out the Big Screen Adventures of those my parents and grandparents turned me onto, as well as “Live Those Songs” of so many I watched on stage, listened to on the radio, and now have become buddies with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NWXNdz3kGc&ob=av2e

I too, am now blessed with the chances…to rock a stage!

This song is appropriate, AGAIN, I have no clue what I do for a living…but even without being able to understand…it is fun!!! I dare ya not to watch/listen to the whole song?!?!? Mahna Mahna Mah!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N_tupPBtWQ&feature=related

Cowboy mood

Never realized it, until the last few years…but for good or bad, I LIVE the songs played in Honky Tonks and on Country Radio. The honesty of my words in daily living, the pushing myself too hard, the going from town to town to “make it,” the hurt and scars I have on my hands joint and heart, the never settling, and the heart ache that I don’t let on…all form THE COWBOY IN ME!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QDwep13uJA

I may not be a great dude, a good DJ, or even someone without any faults. I may even be a real bad boy…but I’m a real good man (so I think)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_auxcCagHI&feature=related

Yet sometimes…I feel while I am riding this great life there are shadows of my past chasing too close as the sun sets on me, and this life (or career). YEP, at times I MAY feel like Jesse James, still tryin to make a name…nothins gonna change.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jJf-p6RYvo&ob=av2e

BUT whatever “this” is; thanx to those who supported, those who gave 2nd (and 5th chances), those who kept my chin up and my hat brim down, those who told me I could not do it, and those who dog me constantly-All of these highs, lows, and potholes that make up this road I am living, and traveling!

Even with all these miles on this trail of life, I am riding with a chip on my shoulder. I was (and maybe still feel like) the short fat kid having dreams that was told I couldn’t make come true.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVjbo8dW9c8&feature=related

BUT NOW (smirking from under this cowboy hat I put on-YES I REALLY DID PUT IT ON), I rock a stage, and I wear this hat…all while asking the simple question to those who said can’t happen (and looking down at the nuns in hell), I simply ask-How Do Like Me Now?!?!?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3umaLe37-LE&ob=av2e

When “The Hat” goes on (He** some people just call me “The Hat)…this song comes on in my mind, almost like the play button is clicked when that brim touches my eyebrows (ya know The REAL way to wear a hat).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqDhE01jV_g&ob=av2e

BUT THIS HAT?!?! It covers up a lot of pain, it hides a lot of discomfort, it is a sign of standing out, maybe a sign of fitting in…but an even greater sign of covering up what I don’t want to be seen. But you mess with it (or my friends’ hats of their own), or you “back me up against a wall”….”YOU’LL HAVE TO FIGHT US ALL!”

After writing that and looking in the mirror…I think “The Hat” is turned into a Big Ole Texas Grin!

All these kids in this bizness are young and gunnin, and come looking for trouble. I know I don’t have long…

This ol’ highway’s getting longer

Seems there ain’t no end in sight

To sleep would be best, but I just can’t afford to rest

I’ve got to ride in Denver tomorrow night

I called the house but no one answered

For the last two weeks no one’s been home

I guess she’s through with me, to tell the truth I just can’t see

What’s kept the woman holding on this long

And the white line’s getting longer and the saddle’s getting cold

I’m much too young to feel this damn old

All my cards are on the table with no ace left in the hole

I’m much too young to feel this damn old

The competition’s getting younger

Tougher broncs, you know I can’t recall

The worn out tape of Chris LeDoux, lonely women and bad booze

Seem to be the only friends I’ve left at all

And the white line’s getting longer and the saddle’s getting cold

I’m much too young to feel this damn old

All my cards are on the table with no ace left in the hole

I’m much too young to feel this damn old

Lord, I’m much too young to feel this damn old

Yea I know this life, won’t last! But right now, It is an 8 Second Ride that is bumpy, hurts, and so exciting I lose my breath!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVxt-Qr8ml0&ob=av2e

…I am HOOKED ON THIS 8 Second Ride!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqDhE01jV_g&ob=av2e

IT is a lot of fun…but also a lot of work, and some pain, hurt, and scars that won’t heal. For me, right now? It is the perfect life! However it is not for everyone, and ya know what…at one time? Maybe not for me!

I guess my Mom never listened

Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Don’t let ’em pick guitars and drive them old trucks

Make ’em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

They’ll never stay home and they’re always alone

Even with someone they love

Cowboys ain’t easy to love and they’re harder to hold

And they’d rather give you a song then diamonds or gold

Lonestar belt buckles and old faded Levi’s each night begins a new day

And if you don’t understand him and he don’t die young

He’ll probly just ride away

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Don’t let ’em pick guitars and drive them old trucks

Make ’em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

They’ll never stay home and they’re always alone

Even with someone they love

Cowboys like smokey old pool rooms and clear mountian moringin’s

Little warm puppies and children and girls of the night

And them that don’t know him won’t like him

And them that do sometimes won’t know how to take him

He ain’t wrong he’s just different

but his pride won’t let him do things to make you think he’s right

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Don’t let ’em pick guitars and drive them old trucks

Make ’em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

They’ll never stay home and they’re always alone

Even with someone they love

Mama don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Don’t let ’em pick guitars and drive them old trucks

Make ’em be doctors and lawyers and such

Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT a Bronco, Bull, or even a Quarter Horse Rider (however I wanna start riding more). I have climbed on a horse or two to trail ride (and no fat ugly chick jokes either!), I have ridden my Steel Horse (actually had 2 of them), the best way to “ride” this life, is to just saddle up and hold on!

My life is busy, full of hard work, I went many years with money then without, and there are more scars and hurt (both inside and out than anyone knows)…but ya know what, I NEVER THOUGHT ANY OF THIS WOULD HAPPEN. And there are some who tell me how lucky I am and they wanna be me. I usually disagree with them, but YA KNOW WHAT!?!??! Keith said it best, “WHO WOULDN’T WANT TO BE ME!?!?!?” (unless you have something against being short)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOx4u1G8ZN4&ob=av2e

To these people that say that…with the exception of achy knees, sore shoulders, a loneliness from trying TOO HARD, and the dream that I pursue that is chased by ghosts (or shadows) of my past…EVERY MORNING I WAKE UP, rub the ears of the World Famous Pepper Dog, smile…and say (yes out loud), “Damn It Feels Good to Be Me!”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06WM8oLH87M

I am on the road in many hotel rooms, many stages, and even more miles traveled. I love what I do (still not sure what it is)…BUT I DO KNOW with all the hills, all the valleys, and all the sunrises before my own sun actually sets for the last time…I do know, I have seen a millions faces-“AND I’VE ROCKED THEM ALL!!!”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRvCvsRp5ho&ob=av2e

So with all that said…come out join me this weekend. Start your stopwatch for your own “8 Second Ride.” MAYBE punch yer ticket to yer own journey of your life. MAYBE it won’t be at one of my events, but MAYBE at my event, on my stage, or YOUR OWN stage of life, that is where you…saddle up!

GREAT READ:

“Surefire Ways to Develop a Thankful Attitude” by Chris Widener

Spend some time thinking about how good you have it. We know this, but we don’t often spend time pondering it. Doing so will shape and mold your attitude and develop healthy thought patterns that will make you more thankful all of the time. As the old hymn goes, “Count Your Blessings, Name Them One by One.” Take some time and write down every single thing you have in your life to be thankful about. Do this with your children if you have some, and you will all be astounded at all the good things in your life.

Look down the socioeconomic chain instead of up. Focusing our thoughts on the things we don’t have, while being a motivator, can also be a source of envy and greed. Focusing, at least on a semi-regular basis, on those who have less than us, causes us to be thankful for what we have.

Go work at a food bank. The more success we achieve, the more apt we are to live our lives around others who are successful, while eliminating or drastically reducing our contact with those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Working at a food bank will open your eyes once again to a world you may have forgotten about.

DID YOU KNOW?:

Why Do Hurricanes Have Names?

For as long as people have been tracking and reporting hurricanes, also known as tropical cyclones, they’ve been struggling to find ways to identify them. Until well into the 20th century, newspapers and forecasters in the United States devised names for storms that referenced their time period, geographic location or intensity; hence, the Great Hurricane of 1722, the Galveston Storm of 1900, the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and the Big Blow of 1913. Meanwhile, hurricanes in the tempestuous West Indies were named for the Catholic saint’s days on which they made landfall.

BIRTHDAY:

Metallica’s Black Album turns 20

THIS ALBUM CHANGED MY OUTLOOK ON MUSIC!!! So much so, I remember where I was the first time I heard this album. I was on a bus on the way to West Jefferson High School for a Football Scrimmage. And on the back of the bus from an old beat up “Boom Box” I heard guitar riffs and double kick drums that changed my musical life!

It’s the old cliché about how something a long time ago feels like it was just yesterday, but I can absolutely remember Metallica’s Black album coming out like it was yesterday.

It was also at the late, lamented Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard that fans lined up at midnight to be the first to get a copy, and many of the same fans did the same a month later when Guns N Roses finally came out with their follow-up to Appetite For Destruction, Use Your Illusions I and II.

The Black album was released on August 12, 1991, and debuted at #1, but this, and the success of “Enter Sandman” was just the beginning for what became a monster that sold 22 million copies. Of course, the whole “Seattle sound” explosion was just right around the corner, but for the two biggest metal/hard rock bands in the world, at that moment things were lookin’ pretty damn good.

Michael Jackson Fan Clubs Demand Tribute Concert Cancellation

A group of Michael Jackson fan clubs across the world have banded together in an open letter to event organizers, asking for the cancellation of a Michael Jackson tribute concert scheduled for Oct. 8 in Wales, Reuters reports.

The 35 fan clubs said that the event, which will include performances by Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson, Cee Lo Green and a satellite performance by Beyoncé, is “doomed to fail.”

BOOK:

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music: The Inspirational Stories behind 101 of Your Favorite Country Songs -Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Randy Rudder

Randy Rudder’s “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music” is an inspirational collection of more than 100 of your favorite country songs. While many fans may focus on the artist singing the song, I think the meat and potatoes to any successful tune is the songwriter behind that creation. In this book, the story comes straight from the songwriter’s mouth in enjoyable bites of information. We hear from Jimmy Webb who talks about the Glen Campbell hits, “Wichita Lineman” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” Tom T. Hall dishes about his musings for “Harper Valley P.T.A.,” Bobby Braddock reveals the history behind Tammy Wynette’s “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” and Alex Harvey tells about the person in his life who inspired “Delta Dawn.” These are just a small sampling of the songs and the people who penned them. Their stories breathe life into the music and lyrics. Even working in country music for 25 years as a d.j. and feature producer, there are many of these stories I’ve never heard or at least with not as much careful detail. Often interviews I did with songwriters gave a small glimpse into the birth of a song, but Randy’s book delivers a beautiful bounty of information in small informative doses and breathes life into the emotions and thoughts of the songwriter. I love it. I want seconds of this bowl of chicken soup. There are more great songs with fascinating stories to tell I’m sure!

At funeral, dog mourns the death of Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan

Jon Tumilson, a Navy SEAL, was one of 30 Americans killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 6 when a rocket-propelled grenade took out a U.S. Chinook helicopter. He was mourned at a service in Rockford, Iowa, attended by 1,500 family members,  friends–and Hawkeye, Tumilson’s dog.

The Labrador retriever was such an important part of Tumilson’s life that the friends and family of theSan Diego resident called the dog his “son.”

POLITICS:

STAY CLASSY UNIONS!!!

Unions’ rejection of Kasich’s offer to re-examine SB 5 was the wrong answer for a state facing serious problems: Editorial

The Plain Dealer Editorial Board

Gov. John Kasich, flanked by Speaker of the House Willliam Batchelder, speaks in the ceremonial governors office about trying to reach a compromise on Senate Bill 5 on Wednesday at the Statehouse.

Perhaps not till Judgment Day will anyone know whether the Senate Bill 5 negotiations Republican Gov. John Kasich offered public-employee unions last week was statesmanship or showmanship.

The unions — expressing skepticism about Kasich’s sincerity, given GOP arrogance in ramming SB 5 through the General Assembly — declined.

So, unless something changes by Aug. 30, the last day to yank an anti-SB 5 referendum from November’s ballot, Ohio is poised for a ferocious statewide fight, pro or contra Senate Bill 5. The only Ohioans sure to come out ahead will be campaign consultants and advertising agents.

The unions demanded, before they would talk with Kasich, that the General Assembly first repeal Senate Bill 5.

WHAT THE HE**?:

Kyle Busch pleads guilty to speeding

NASCAR points leader Kyle Busch lost his driver’s license for 45 days on Tuesday for driving 128 mph on a road close to a day-care center and church in a nearly $400,000 car. His lawyer said his client was not treated “like any other citizen.”

Busch, who doesn’t need a license to compete in NASCAR, also was fined $1,000, sentenced to 30 hours of community service and put on one year of unsupervised probation. He pleaded guilty to speeding and no contest to reckless and careless driving in North Carolina District Court in Iredell County.

Kyle Busch shows he has what it takes to snatch Jimmie Johnson’s crown, Lee Spencer says.

Thirsty Boy Becomes Trapped In Chimney

Police in Utah say a thirsty 8-year-old boy trying to get a drink in a neighbor’s home by sliding down through the chimney was trapped for more than four hours.

West Valley City police Sgt. Robert Hamilton says the boy climbed a tree to get to the roof, then went down the chimney feet first on Friday. Hamilton says the boy lives several blocks away and recently was in the home for a play date.

The boy made it 30 feet down before he became wedged between the basement and main floor.

Bo knows what? Bo Jackson’s surprising post-NFL/MLB career

“…more than two decades after those ads first aired, who would have thought the former NFL and Major League Baseball star — the guy who was the subject of so much awe and admiration for his seemingly superhuman athletic ability — would know banking, too?”

BUCKEYES:

Jim Tressel visits Bengals last Georgetown practice, possible ‘professional collaboration’

The late Paul Brown recruited his father Lee Tressel to Ohio State, though WWII intruded. So PB helped the senior Tressel catch on as a coach at Mentor High School.

That led to young Jim Tressel’s first job in football. After his dad assumed the head coaching position at Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio, his friendship with Paul Brown deepened as BW hosted Browns training camp. One of little Jimmy’s chores was holding place kicks for legendary Cleveland kicker, Lou Groza.

In short, there is a long and warm history between Jim Tressel and the Brown family. Another indication is that shortly after Tressel resigned at Ohio State, Pete Brown, Mike’s brother and the Bengals senior VP of player personnel, paid Tressel a visit in Columbus. Considering how few people were invited to the Tressel home during those tumultuous days, Pete’s presence again underscores the Brown family’s admiration for the Tressels and vice versa.

SUCCESS:

Reach Your Goals with This Simple Trick

More bars equal more success. (And fewer dropped calls.)

The progress bar doesn’t just tell you how much time you’ve got left on that new album download. It’s also the key to getting what you want.

You put forth more effort to reach a goal when you can visualize how close you are to achieving it, according to a new study in the Journal of Marketing.

Picture it: Study volunteers could sustain their grip longer and use more force in a physical task if they saw a bar on a computer screen fill in 2 minutes vs. if they saw a stopwatch counting down for the same amount of time. Even waiting for tech support on the phone was more bearable if people had an image representing how close they were to getting a response compared to seeing a countdown.

“Being able to visualize the finish elicits a feeling of closeness to the goal,” says study author Rajesh Bagchi, Ph.D., assistant professor of marketing of Virginia Tech University. “Seldom do we want to give up when we feel we have almost made it.” It’s like mountain climbing—you wouldn’t throw in the towel when you’re 20 feet from the summit.

Whether your goal is to save cash, lose weight, finish a 10K, or hit your numbers at work, here are three rules to make this technique work for you.

1. Draw It Out

For that 10K, you’ll need to run 6 miles. Right now you can only make it through two. No problem: Draw a bar with zero on one side and a six on the other. As you gradually increase the distance you can run without stopping, color in the bar, Bagchi recommends.

2. Add Other Visual Cues

Want to bench press 250 pounds? Use a progress bar that gets bigger as you add on weights. Or if you’re aiming to save $500 for a new iPad, draw stacks of dollar bills, shading them in as you put them in the bank. This helps you see success even more clearly.

3. Keep It Big-Picture

The technique didn’t work as well when study participants focused on smaller goals along the way. “People tend to take a break—a well-earned breather—after achieving a sub-goal. This decreases the overall benefit of being able to visualize an end goal,” Bagchi says. So avoid breaking up your monthly sales goals into weekly targets, or visualize losing 2 pounds a week instead of 10 pounds this month. Create your chart with the end goal in mind.
