Just another weblog

What a week? “The People” spoke (actually yelled at Washington) regarding “The Kennedy Seat,” we all have made it through what most scientists call the most “gloomy week” of the year. We are watching and helping international aid in Haiti (as well as seeing Local and National heroes emerge), and in O-H-I-O OUR BUCKEYES are back in the Top 25 with Evan Turner ON FIRE, along with LeBron James leading The NBA All-Star Vote. AND we have a huge weekend with concerts. Here’s is a look at what is going on from National Publications and some of my thoughts…
You are not alone, BUT the Gloomiest Day of the year is over!
Beat the week of January 18, ‘most depressing days of year’ with happiness,
London, January 18 (ANI): Cliff Arnall, the psychologist, who dubbed the third Monday in January, as the most depressing day of the year has called for the idea to be refuted and is urging people to look for happiness instead.
Cliff Arnall, from Brecon, Wales, identified January 18 as the most miserable date in the calendar for Britons, with the help of a pseudo-mathematical formula involving the weather, debt, motivational levels and time elapsed since Christmas.
“I was originally asked to come up with what I thought was the best day to book a summer holiday but when I started thinking about the motives for booking a holiday, reflecting on what thousands had told me during stress management or happiness workshops, there were these factors that pointed to the third Monday in January as being particularly depressing … but it is not particularly helpful to put that out there and say ‘there you are’ … it is almost a self-fulfilling prophecy that it is the most depressing day,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.
The self-styled ‘freelance happiness guru’, also a member of the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis, is now encouraging people to “refute the whole notion” and use Monday January 18 to “get a bit of perspective” about their lives.
He added: “I’m pleased about the impact it if it means people are talking about depression and how they feel but I’m also encouraging people to refute the whole notion of there being a most depressing day and to use the day as a springboard for the things that really matter in your life.
“I see a lot of clients who are just fed up with materialistic lives, trying to play catch-up with your neighbors and forgetting what the important things are.” (ANI)

Taco Bell founder dead at 86
Think they just wrapped him in some foil? This guy was a genius and helped America into obesity with “Forth Meal”
RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – Glen W. Bell Jr., an entrepreneur best known as the founder of the Taco Bell chain, has died. He was 86.
Bell died Sunday at his home in Rancho Santa Fe, according to a statement posted Monday on the Taco Bell Web site.
The Irvine-based company did not release a cause of death.
“Glen Bell was a visionary and innovator in the restaurant industry, as well as a dedicated family man,” Greg Creed, president of Taco Bell, said in the statement.
Bell launched his first restaurant, called Bell’s Drive-In, in 1948 in San Bernardino after seeing the success of McDonald’s Bar-B-Que, the predecessor of McDonald’s, which was founded in the same city in 1940. Like McDonald’s, Bell’s restaurant sought to take advantage of Southern California’s car culture by serving hamburgers and hot dogs through drive-in windows.
The World War II veteran next helped establish Taco Tias in Los Angeles, El Tacos in the Long Beach area, and Der Wienerschnitzel, a national hot dog chain.
Bell launched Taco Bell in 1962 in Downey after cutting ties with his business partners and quickly expanding around Los Angeles.
He sold the first Taco Bell franchise in 1964. In 1978, Bell sold his 868 Taco Bell restaurants to PepsiCo for $125 million in stock.
Taco Bell is now owned by Yum! Brands and is the largest Mexican fast-food chain in the nation, serving more than 36.8 million consumers each week in more than 5,600 U.S. locations.
Bell is survived by his wife, Martha, three sisters, two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.
A private funeral is planned.
YOU DA MAN: 3 installments this week
For the past few years a good friend of mine has been taking time out of her career to better the lives of the Haitian people as a Missionary. She was scheduled to go a few weeks ago (week before quake), however, her plans were pushed back, and she missed the devastation. She has elected to go forward with her plans and leaves for Haiti probably about the time you may be reading this. I am proud of what she does, proud of who she is, and proud to call her a friend-that is when we are speaking. Please be safe Ginny Andrews!
Keeping on the Haiti Front and keeping with the “Anders…” theme. DID YOU SEE ANDERSON COOPER? I usually don’t like reporters who do commentary on death and destruction (seems they try to create a story out of someone else’ tragedy ala Micheal Moore), BUT, Anderson Cooper saw a young boy who was hurt in a looting scene in Haiti, and risked his own health to save the boy. Not only does Cooper have the best hair on TV, sorry Stone Philips…but he is also a hero.

Mark Titus becomes an Internet star, and helps others (plus has really good taste in music, watch the link)
Buckeye bench warmer becomes Internet, YouTube star
Mark Titus’ “Club Trillion” has more than 2 million hits and “Mr. Rainmaker” video, one of You Tube’s most watched
Ohio State basketball walk-on Mark Titus started his “Club Trillion” web-site, as a tongue-in-cheek way of keeping family in friends up to date on the behind the scenes happenings of the basketball Buckeyes.  More than two years later, it’s become much more than that.
“I really didn’t expect anybody to read it,” Titus said of “Club Trillion.  “I remember when I had 500 total blog hits and I called everyone and just bragged…Every single day, I can’t believe how cool this is.”
Titus has become a cult-hero of buckeye basketball fans.  “Club Trillion” just passed the 2 million hit plateau and his latest creation, a video called, “Mr. Rainmaker” has been viewed more than 50,000 times on “YouTube.”
“I still do feel like like a bench-warmer, loser who can’t get any respect or can’t catch a break,” Titus said.  “Everytime I do something, I feel like no one is going to care or notice…you think I would learn my lesson.”
The “Mr. Rainmaker” video runs less than four minutes.  It’s a parody which features the little used Titus making trick shots and giving tips on the fundamentals of basketball.  While he made the video to make people laugh, Titus says there’s no editing involved in the shots.
“I got really lucky.  Most of the shots were made on my first or second try,” Titus said.  “We didn’t really spend a whole lot of time on it.  It was something I didn’t think would be that big of a deal, but I guess it is.”
Titus has parlayed his Internet fame as a means to help others.  “Club Trillion” T-shirts are sold on the site, with the proceeds going to “A kid Again,” a charity benefiting children with life threatening illnesses.  The shirt sale has raised more than $14,000.
“That’s the coolest thing about the whole deal,” Titus said.  “That’s the most rewarding thing…It’s a chance to give back to kids who don’t have opportunities that I have.”

I can’t stand MTV’s new weekly documentary ‘Jersey Shore.’ It takes every negative Italian stereotype and mixes with alcohol, and raging hormones. If I made ANY COMMENTS stereotyping Italians I would be defriended (whoops used a word from the 2010 banned list) by my friends Civello’s, DeToto’s, Annotelli’s, etc. BUT YET THESE KIDS ON MTV ARE LIVING OUT THE NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES AND ARE CELEB-REALITY STARS, COME ON!!!
Not really a Rant but concerns over Red Cross not wanting any “physical” donations, just monetary contributions. I was taught NEVER TURN DOWN ANYTHING FOR SOMEONE ELSE?!?!?! The Red Cross wants money, and Blood…neither will have ALL UNITS/DONATIONS earmarked for Haiti. The Red Cross SELLS THEIR DONATED BLOOD UNITS!
Here is another concern I have, The Red Cross originally pledged $200,000.00 in Haitian Relief. That amount was then increased to  1 million in funding. As of January 15th, the red cross has raised over 5 million JUST FROM THE TEXTING DRIVE. This does not include any other donations. With that said; this is being typed on January 20th, 5 days later. I can only assume there are additional monies that have been raised, and yet there has been no additional funds allocated to Haiti by the Red Cross (if there is information contradicting this, please send my way).
Red Cross: Money best way to help quake victims
Local chapter stands ready to help in any way it can.
The Red Cross of Greater Columbus is waiting for marching orders in response to the earthquake in Haiti. CEO Michael Carroll says they are ready to send whatever resources are requested.
“The worst thing you can do in these circumstances is to send people and stuff before its requested,” Carroll said.
He says there are people wanting to go to Haiti and help out with the recovery or clean out their closet and send clothing, but the best course of action is to donate money.
“The easiest thing to move into a relief effort is a financial contribution and that’s the plain truth,” Carroll said.
Blood Drives vs Red Cross
Armed Services Blood Program
Since its inception in 1951, the Armed Services Blood Program operated under the concept of only the military taking care of their own.  Veterans and patriotic Americans though, found this restriction uniquely discriminating, especially when it was .revealed the Armed Services during times of conflict had to purchase blood products from civilian agencies such as the American Red Cross. and at a cost of several hundred dollars a pint.
In August of 2007, two daring Columbus Dispatch reporters began to question why the Department of Defense would not allow civilians to donate to its blood program, the Armed Service Blood Program.  This led to the Federal Government to changing its 55 year old policy.
Through the sponsorship of the American Legion, United States Army Reserve and the Marine Corps Family Support Community, the Armed Service Blood Program unit based at Wright Paterson AFB travels to Columbus to collect blood that goes directly to the military, often to Iraq or Afghanistan.  These collections occur every other month.
The next drive will be on Saturday, January 23th at the Army Reserve Center at 165 N Yearling Road, Whitehall, Oh (just east of DSCC), from 9 AM to 1:30 PM.  Walk-ins are welcome but if you prefer to make an appointment you may do so at:
Future drives can be found at
New activity in Iraq and Afghanistan is putting our military at risk.  We must make sure that they have the blood to support their needs.

BROWN WINS, in a state where Democrats out number Republicans 3-1 ( An apparent clear cut message was sent to Washington and the current administration had White House staffers arrogantly (for their position) stating “This is not an indication on our policy, it means we will work harder for our agenda”-WHAT!?!?!
Here are some more GREAT Quotes from Tuesday Night;
“The ‘Scott’ heard round the world”
“Tell The Fat Lady she is on in 10…10 months till November” (Mary Jo may not have a voice them)
“This is not an indication on our policy, it means we will work harder for our agenda”
“Cleveland Sports fans shocked…Haven’t seen a Brown dominate in years!”
“Behind the downfall of every great man , stands a Cold Hearted Woman” (hold on if you don’t get it, give it a minute)

Leno vs Conan, Conan vs NBC…
David Letterman should be happy. In recent months Letterman’s off camera antics have landed him in hot water making ratings suffer and potentially costing him his job, and family. But the Gap-Toothed funny man has again come out on top (as he did in the early 90’s), and in the last few weeks DOMINATED the ratings war. It has been fun to watch the NBC drama unfold, but, gotta ask…for you folks demonstrating to keep Conans’ job, 1.) Do you realize how much MORE money he stands to make from Settlement/buyout/lawsuit, and going to another network? 2.) Do you realize that there are more important issues to protest than Late Night TV (which most Americans East of Mississippi are in bed while on)? 3.) Conan is a dweeb who alienates the Midwest with his HORRIBLE sketches and commentary
NBC has once again screwed up (ala 1991 with Letterman and Leno)
Give to Jimmy Fallon, and Carson. They are the future, and in all honesty I feel they have more talent than Leno, Conan, OR Letterman!
Vatican slams Avatar for worshiping Nature. This does not make me rethink watching the movie, all this does is make me picture The Pope in 3-D glasses!
Vatican Slams ‘Avatar’
VATICAN CITY — “Avatar” is wooing audiences worldwide with visually dazzling landscapes and nature-loving blue creatures. But the Vatican is no easy crowd to please.
The Vatican newspaper and radio station are criticizing James Cameron’s 3-D blockbuster for flirting with the idea that worship of nature can replace religion – a notion the pope has warned against. They call the movie a simplistic and sappy tale, despite its awe-inspiring special effects.
“Not much behind the images” was how the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, summed it up in a headline.
As the second highest-grossing movie ever, “Avatar” is challenging the record set by Cameron’s previous movie “Titanic.”
Generally it has been critically acclaimed and is touted as a leading Oscar contender.
Bolivia’s first indigenous president, Evo Morales, has praised “Avatar” for what he calls its message of saving the environment from exploitation. But the movie also has drawn a number of critical voices. Some American conservative bloggers have decried its anti-militaristic message; a small group of people have said the movie contains racist themes.
To Vatican critics, the alien extravaganza is just “bland.”
Cameron “tells the story without going deep into it, and ends up falling into sappiness,” said L’Osservatore Romano. Vatican Radio called it “rather harmless” but said it was no heir to sci-fi masterpieces of the past.

Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser star in ‘Extraordinary Measures,’ based on a true story this is an action adventure showcasing how far a dad will go and how hard he will drive himself, and others to save his children. “Measures” is rated “PG-13.”
MY PICK OF THE WEEK, ‘Legion,’ rated “R.” This thriller is God vs Humanity in the back of a diner in middle of nowhere. Sounds lame? NOPE, one of the best movies so far this year! Specials effects, “jumpy” moments, and action!
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars in the family friendly ‘The Tooth Fairy,’ rated “PG.” A hard hitting Hockey player develops his nickname from knocking out opponents teeth. He also knocks out youngster’s dreams…when this happens, he is forced to become a “real” tooth fairy. This movie is funny even outside of looking at 6’6 290 pound “The Rock” in a Tu Tu.
Good stay at home date night movie, ‘The Invention of Lying,’ rated “PG-13.”
The award winning Soundtrack “Crazy Heart”
